Next (meaning next time I put together a gravestone post, not next time I post, because it takes a while to do these!), I think I’ll post a comparison of Jonathan/John Loomis’ different design variations. Caulfield talks about it in his book, and it’s fascinating! There are a bunch of different designs used in the area immediately below the face, in the area immediately above the face, and in the area immediately above the legend. (Caulfield even has graphs showing the chronology and abundance of the different designs!) I think one of the things that most appeals to me about the Loomis style is that it is quite clean and simple but there is enough variation between stones to give them a lot of personality.
